National University of Samoa’s Faculty of Education (FOE) recently hosted a unique fashion
design exhibition titled “Trashion Refashion Show”. The show highlighted the creative talent and
environmentally conscious approach of FOE’s textile technology courses, HFT004 and HFT101.
The exhibition was held at the Niule’a Conference Room and showcased innovative,
sustainable, and visually appealing designs created by students using waste materials.
The “Trashion Refashion Show” challenged students to create new and innovative designs using
various waste materials. To achieve this, the competition was divided into three categories: (1)
Plastic Trash Bags, (2) Plastic Packaging and Products, (3) Paper Trash. The designs were judged
based on creativity, sustainability, functionality, and aesthetics. The show was amazing in its
approach to fashion design, as it showcased the potential of waste materials and highlighted
the importance of reducing waste pollution.
Professor Tuifuisa’a Patila Malua Amosa also commended the faculty and students’ hard work in
making the event possible. According to Laeimau Tauti Peru Tugaga, the textile technology
courses’ lecturer, using waste materials will help reduce littering and maintain cleanliness in the
NUS Campus environment.
Afioga Tavu’i Dr. Niusila Faamanatu-Eteuati, Dean of FOE, expressed her admiration for the
students’ work, noting that she was in awe of the innovative talents and resilience showcased
by students at the exhibition. She also acknowledged the support provided by the lecturer,
Laeimau Tautī Peru Tugaga, and the students’ families.
The “Trashion Refashion Show” was a success and demonstrated the creativity and
environmental consciousness of the NUS – Faculty of Education Textile Technology courses’
students. It is also a reminder to the attendees of the importance of sustainable practices and

innovative approaches in recycling and reusing discarded materials which are valuable
resources that can benefit the society.
