JAPAN’S GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR GRASS-ROOTS HUMAN SECURITY PROJECTS (GGP)

The Government of Japan continued to assist the grass-roots communities during these
uncertain times with improving learning environments across Samoa.
The Signing Ceremonies to formalise the provision of approved grants under Japan’s Grant
Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) were held earlier today (18
March) at the Embassy in Apia, between the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of Japan to Samoa, H.E. Mr. SENTA Keisuke and representatives of the following respective
school committees, association and organisation.
Faga Primary School Committee received a grant of up to USD 202,656 (approximately SAT
499,000) for a project reconstruction of 8 new classrooms, a staff room, computer room and
library as well as a new toilet block.  The project aims to provide a safe and proper
educational facilities for use by students at Faga Primary School.
Vaimauga College School Committee received a grant of up to USD 295,229 (approximately
SAT 745,000) for a project construction of a single-storey school hall building with toilet and
shower facilities. The project aims to provide a safe and proper educational facilities for use
by students at Vaimauga College.
The Samoa Recycling and Waste Management Association (SRWMA) received a grant of up
to USD 136,859 (approximately SAT 349,000) that will assist the association to strengthen
their activities and improve collection and recycling services across Samoa. The project aims
to provide one carrier truck and one crane truck which were formerly used by Japanese local
public organizations that will be reconditioned and brought to Samoa through the Society of
Promotion of Japanese Diplomacy, as well as one dump truck and one fork loader formerly
used here in Samoa. The occasion was a fitting way to also commemorate and recognised the
Global Recycling Day.
Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (SFESA) received a grant of up to USD
282,309 (approximately SAT 720,000) for a project for providing firefighting equipment
consisting of two water tank trucks, one pumper water tank truck and one chemical pump
truck formerly used by Iwaki City in Fukushima Prefecture, that will be reconditioned and
brought to Samoa through the Society of Promotion of Japanese Diplomacy as well as three
new mobile floodlights.
Japan’s GGP  aims to support small-scale projects directly benefitting the grass-roots level as
well as contributing to the socio-economic development of the Independent State of Samoa.

The Government of Japan welcomes the opportunities to further work in partnership with the
Government of Samoa with a view to advancing human security and community
development projects at grass-roots level.
