The National University of Samoa (NUS) was visited today by the New Zealand Minister
of Foreign Affairs – Honourable Nanaia Mahuta – and her delegation. The purpose of her
visit was to sight some of the facilities that will be used in the delivery of the Bachelor of
Health Science programme, which is funded by the Government of New Zealand.
The Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) programme aims to address a critical staff
shortage in Allied Health professionals within Samoa’s Health Sector. The National
University of Samoa together with the Ministry of Health are collaborating in this
important Human Resource development project for Samoa. The Bachelor of Health
Science programme is set to be launched in February 2024.
During her visit, the Hon. Nanaia Mahuta was given a brief tour of the Science Labs
where the BHSc practicals and classes will be held.
The NUS Vice Chancellor – Associate Professor Tuifuisa’a Patila Amosa welcomed the
Hon. Nanai Mahuta and her delegation before a brief presentation on the progress of
the BHSc programme to date. Hon. Nanaia Mahuta then gave her brief remarks and
exchanged gifts with our NUS Vice Chancellor to mark her visit to the University.
Our NUS Vice Chancellor – Associate Professor Tuifuisa’a stated that “The National
University of Samoa is grateful to the Hon. Nanaia Mahuta for visiting the National
University of Samoa for the first time. The visit while brief is both significant as it reflects
the NZ Government’s commitment to Samoa’s Health sector priority needs and symbolic
in that it strengthens its Treaty of Friendship relations with Samoa at all levels of
government.”
