Special Olympics Samoa is hosting mini games funded by the European Union in celebration of the National Disability Week and International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The European Union through the Civil Society Support
Programme (CSSP) awarded SAT$200,000 to the Special Olympics Samoa (SOS) in 2020 to
support a 2-year initiative which focuses on creating a world of inclusion and community,
encouraging a shift in perspective and behaviour towards those with Intellectual disabilities
through their involvement and participation in sports.
The SOS plays an important role in leading many sport activities and programs to enable access
of persons with/without intellectual disabilities to services at the community level. Community
Outreach and Awareness Programs were carried out in Upolu and Savaii targeting parents,
caregivers, and children with/without intellectual disabilities with the purpose of raising
awareness through the recognition and acceptance of those with disabilities in sports,
encouraging the participation of young athletes, boys and girls as well as men and women.
Monthly mini games were carried out to encourage the continuous efforts and participation of
the community in providing equal opportunities for all, regardless of their age and gender, to
demonstrate courage and sportsmanship.
“There are 260 beneficiaries including parents and volunteers who are invited to join our
monthly games in commemoration of the National Disability Week. Through sports, persons
with & without intellectual disabilities develop independence and are empowered to become
leaders and can lead changes within their communities. Sports participation benefits persons
with/without intellectual disabilities in our local community groups that can prevent health
problems, provide healthy competition, and promote the use of time, their ability and also
valuable life skills. A great opportunity to engage them in group activities in the surrounding
environment to reduce the risk of isolation and discrimination” said Unasa Elizabeth Ah Poe
(National Director SOS).
According to NAO Peseta Noumea Simi, “CSSP through the SOS provides the opportunity
that guarantees inclusiveness so that no one is left behind particularly those with disabilities.”
The Samoa Special Olympics is hosting monthly games for Savaii starting on the 2nd
December,2021 leading up to the commemoration of the International Day of Persons with
Disabilities and end the National Disability Week for persons with disabilities on the 3rd
December, 2021. The theme for this year is “Leadership and participation of persons with
disabilities towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-covid-19 World.”
